I'd had an air-pistol since I was 9 but when I got to about 13, my Mum told my Dad he should 'do something' with me. So, the next thing I knew, he'd bought us a couple of air-rifles. But not knowing any better, he got them in .22 and when we looked at joining a club, nowhere would take us. The only place that would - because we don’t shoot in village halls etc - was an FT club, Kent Woodsmen FTC and the rest is history 😁

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜?

I’m 50 now and got my first airgun, a GAT pistol, for my 9th birthday and Ive been shooting FT for 37 years now!

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙁𝙏?

That's a tough one but after 37 years in the sport, the feeling I get from breaking the trigger and seeing a 50+ yarder flop over in my scope picture never gets old 😊

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣?

I have to say the 2004 World Championships in Eburn, Germany, where I won my (first😉) World Championship title🏆 It was three days and 150 targets, more than 135 of them mini's! It was so hard and so intense that I remember praying at one point that I would win, as I doubted I might ever be able to dig that deep ever again 🙏🙏🙏

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙁𝙏 𝙨𝙤 𝙛𝙖𝙧?

See above. Although winning and then retaining the British Open title this year was very special too.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙁𝙏?

Just get out there with whatever kit you've got and shoot as many different grounds in as many different conditions as possible.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜?

I try to break the course down into mini goals eg. Hit all my standers today, or minis etc. I also 'allow' myself one miss per line on the score-card and try to make back any additional misses; so if I miss two shots on the first line, I 'just' need to clear the second line and so on.

Apart from that, I just try to focus on the process and repeat so that my preparation for every shot is the same.

After some interesting comments, my wife says I’m tenacious, so I’ll go with that LOL😂

I like to go wild foraging with my daughter each year and make jams! Damson, Plumb etc. Its a hangover from my youth and it amazes me that people walk straight past these free , natural resources 🍯🥪

If I had the talent then football, I guess. Or Darts 🎯 but back in the 80's when you could sink 8 pints during a match 🍺🍺🍺😁

🎯 𝐌𝐄𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐑: 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐅𝐓𝐀 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲!

This week, we’re getting to know one of our talented Field Target shooters! From discovering FT at just 11 years old, this shooter’s journey has l Shead to talk about life in FT, memorable moments, what keeps her coming back for more, and a few things you might not know about them! 👀

🎯 𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈…

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠?

I was introduced to FT through family when I was around 11 years old. Initially, I thought I’d just give it a try. Several years later, I’m still trying it, just with significantly more equipment and considerably less spare time! 😂

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠?

I’ve been shooting for several years, and it’s become a big part of my life. I had some long breaks when I moved away from home, but in 2011 I started getting that pang of missing shooting.

One Sunday, I decided to pop along to my old club, ICENI, and was greeted like a long-lost friend. The rest is history…

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐓?

The challenge. There’s always something to learn, whether it’s technique, wind reading or simply keeping your concentration.

I also love the social side. FT is one of those sports where you’re competing against people who’ll happily help you improve at the same time. It’s also one of the best ways to clear your head, get out into the countryside and even travel internationally.

Although there are times during the winter when you start to question your life choices! 🥶😂

🏆 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

I’ve been lucky enough to shoot at various grounds around the country and occasionally internationally, in all sorts of weather conditions. Some experiences stick in the mind for good reasons, others not so much!

I’m probably still carrying mud around from Brook Valley a few years ago, cactus spines from Arizona… and PTSD from Italy 2022! 😂

What makes a shoot memorable? The outcome, or the environment? Sometimes it’s definitely both!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐓 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐫?

Being part of the World Championship-winning team in Arizona. We went in with zero expectations and came back World Champions! 🏆

I’ve also finished third in the Ladies’ World Championship category three times. The first time felt like a dream. The second time, I thought, “This isn’t a fluke!” By the third, I started to think bronze might just be my favourite colour. 🥉😂

However, recovering from spinal surgery and returning to international competition means just as much to me. There was a time when my focus wasn’t on scores; it was simply on getting back to doing what I love.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐅𝐓?

Just get started! Don’t worry about having the latest rifle, scope or accessories.

Most experienced FT shooters will happily help you. In fact, if you ask a question, you’ll probably receive three answers, five opinions and a discussion that lasts longer than the competition! 😂

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Ideally, very little!

I’ve found that when I’m shooting at my best, I’ll often have a song stuck in my head. It’s usually a sign that I’m relaxed and not trying to micromanage every shot. My subconscious is in control, and I’m simply following my routine.

If I’m analysing every position, every wind call and every possible outcome, things tend to go downhill fairly quickly. If I’m mentally humming along to a song from ten years ago, I’m usually doing quite well.

Unfortunately, the song isn’t always a good one, and occasionally that’s a challenge in itself! 🎶

👀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲…

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲?

Probably resilience.

Balancing a demanding career, health conditions and competing internationally has taught me the value of persistence. I generally keep going until I’ve either solved the problem or exhausted everyone else’s patience! 😂

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

Most people know me as a shooter, but professionally I’m a business leader in the food testing industry.

It’s quite a contrast. During the week, I’m leading teams, discussing strategy and managing business performance. At weekends, I’m trying to work out why a pellet has landed 15mm away from where I was absolutely certain it was going!

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞?

Probably archery.

It seems to offer many of the same attractions: precision, concentration, frustratingly small margins and an endless belief that the next attempt will be much better!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

“Control the controllables.”

It’s advice that’s helped me throughout my career, during recovery from surgery and in competition. You can’t control the weather, the wind or what anyone else does.

Unfortunately, those are often the things I’d quite like to control! 😂

🍿𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒏 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒇𝒇!

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐕 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰?

The Real Housewives… of absolutely any city! 😂

While most people know me through Field Target shooting, competitions and spending weekends outdoors in all weathers, my less glamorous side is perfectly happy sitting down to watch The Real Housewives.

Beverly Hills, New York, Atlanta, Orange County or anywhere else — I’m not particularly fussy. After a week of work, sometimes a bit of unapologetic chaos, drama and questionable life choices is exactly what’s needed!

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡?

Football, probably. As a long-time Leeds fan, I’ve suffered through many years of ups and downs! 💛💙

I’ll also happily watch any major sporting competition, including the Olympics and the Tennis Grand Slams.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟?

Resilient.

Everyone has bad days, but I’ve always believed it’s not the setbacks that define you; it’s how you respond to them.

Whether it’s battling difficult conditions on the shooting course, recovering from major spinal surgery or dealing with the inevitable disappointments that come with competition, I’ve learned to keep moving forward.

Sometimes that means adapting, sometimes it means digging a little deeper, but it always means refusing to give up.

From World Championship success to overcoming personal challenges, this is a great reminder that Field Target is about so much more than the scorecard. It’s about the people, the friendships, the challenges and the determination to keep coming back.
